A Personal Reflection on Remembrance
Every year on November 11th, Canadians pause to remember, but for me, it’s also a moment to reflect.
My grandfather served in World War II. I didn’t get to spend much time with him growing up, but the stories I did hear have stayed with me.
He once told me he wished no war upon any man. At the time, I didn’t understand what that truly meant, but as I’ve grown older, those words have taken on new meaning. My grandfather was a man of quiet strength—solid, capable, and unshakable—yet behind that strength was a tenderness that war had carved into him.
He brought home a few things from that time: German military items that he kept not as trophies, but as reminders. They represented loss, sacrifice, and the haunting truth that even the victors carry scars.
Remembrance Day isn’t just about history. It’s a reflection on how fragile life is, how precious peace can be, and how deeply we owe our freedom to those who stood before us.
Freedom and the Legacy of Service
We honour the men and women who gave everything for freedoms we often take for granted — the freedom to speak, to work, to raise our families, and to live in peace.
Their courage built the foundation of this country, a Canada rooted in compassion, courage, and community.
Even today, that legacy continues. Our peacekeepers, first responders, and armed forces still stand guard to protect the values that define us. They remind us that remembrance is not just about the past; it’s a promise to protect the future.
Honouring Through Reflection, Not Routine
