Why I’m Proud to Be Part of the Skilled Trades Conversation – With HIEC
On Wednesday, June 4, I’ll be joining students and educators from across the region for a Skilled Trades Career Talk hosted by HIEC — the Halton Industry Education Council. I’ve been invited as a Spotlight Speaker to share my journey in the skilled trades, talk about what it’s like running a furnace and duct cleaning company in Hamilton, and answer questions from the next generation of trades professionals.
And honestly? I couldn’t be more excited.
The skilled trades have always been close to my heart. As president of Vacu-Man Furnace and Duct Cleaning, I’m proud to carry on the 45-year legacy my father started right here in Hamilton, Ontario. From early mornings coordinating crews to late nights reviewing jobs and quotes, the daily grind of running a family business in Hamilton is something I take seriously — and personally.
But just as important as the work we do inside homes and businesses is the work we do outside them: building up the next generation right here in our community.
That’s why I’m volunteering my time to speak at this HIEC event. If I can answer a few questions, spark an interest, or inspire even one student in the Hamilton-Halton area to consider the trades as a real career path, then I consider that a day well spent. Tradespeople aren’t just working on buildings — we’re building futures.
Supporting skilled trades training in Hamilton is one more way I try to give back. It’s no different than my role as President of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, where I help lead community service initiatives that support children, education, and those in need across our city. Whether it’s organizing Christmas toy drives, helping fund school lunches, or speaking about trades, the goal is the same — leave things better than I found them.
So yes, I’ll still be back on the tools or behind the desk the next morning. But for that one hour on June 4, I’ll be speaking to the future — and I’m honoured to do it.
Because whether it’s through Rotary or the trades, giving back to Hamilton is just part of the job.
