Signs of Mold in Your Ducts
The clearest signs of mold in your ducts are a musty smell when the furnace or AC first kicks on, dark spotting around vent covers and registers, and allergy or respiratory symptoms that ease noticeably when you’re away from home.
None of these signs are proof on their own — a musty smell can also mean a dirty filter, and dark marks near a vent are sometimes just dust discoloration. But if you’re noticing more than one of these together, especially after a period of flooding, a humidifier malfunction, or chronic basement dampness, it’s worth having the system professionally inspected.
What Makes Ducts Grow Mold
Mold needs three things to establish itself: moisture, warmth, and a food source. In most homes, the food source — dust, hair, and debris — is already sitting in the ductwork. What’s usually missing is sustained moisture, and that typically comes from one of a few sources:
- Flooding or water intrusion — ducts that have sat in standing water accumulate moisture deep in the system, often in spots that don’t dry out on their own.
- Condensation on uninsulated runs — when warm, humid air meets a cold duct surface, water droplets form. This is most common in basements and crawl spaces where ductwork isn’t insulated.
- Humidifier overflow or malfunction — a whole-home humidifier tied into the furnace can overshoot its target humidity and introduce excess moisture directly into the airflow.
- Chronic basement humidity — Ontario basements that run persistently damp, even without a specific leak, create the sustained moisture mold needs to take hold.
Within the duct system itself, mold — and the rust that often accompanies it — tends to show up in specific spots: the A-coil, just above the heat exchanger, or inside the blower fan casing, wherever condensation lingers longest. It’s a fairly uncommon outcome overall, mostly because moving air dries these components out before mold gets a foothold. Setting an air conditioner unusually low in summer is one of the more common ways homeowners inadvertently tip that balance, since it increases condensation.

Is Mold in Air Ducts a Health Risk?
For most healthy people, brief exposure to mold spores from ductwork isn’t a serious issue — everyone breathes in mold spores regularly without getting sick. That said, according to the CDC, mold exposure can trigger allergic reactions, worsen asthma, and cause respiratory irritation, and the risk is meaningfully higher for people with asthma, existing lung conditions, or weakened immune systems.
What about Aspergillus specifically? Aspergillus is a large genus with more than 250 species, and it’s one of the more common molds found in HVAC systems because — unlike many molds — some species can tolerate lower moisture levels, including dust buildup inside ductwork. The CDC identifies roughly 40 Aspergillus species as capable of causing infection in humans, most notably A. fumigatus. For the average healthy person, Aspergillus exposure typically causes nothing more than mild allergy-type symptoms, if anything at all. The real risk is concentrated in immunocompromised individuals and people with asthma or chronic lung disease, for whom it’s worth being more cautious and addressing any suspected mold promptly.
Do You Need Testing?
In most cases, no. Health Canada doesn’t recommend air testing for mould in residential settings — a test doesn’t tell you anything about health risk, doesn’t identify the moisture source causing the growth, and you don’t need to know the exact mould species to remove it. If you can see mold or consistently smell it when the system runs, that’s already enough evidence to move to remediation.
Testing becomes worthwhile mainly when you need formal documentation: settling an insurance claim, satisfying a condition on a real estate deal, or backing up a health complaint in a landlord dispute. Outside of those situations, the money is better spent on the cleaning itself.
Professional Removal: What It Involves

This isn’t a DIY job. Scrubbing, vacuuming with a household vacuum, or spraying chemicals directly into the duct system tends to push spores further into the system and out through the vents rather than removing them.
Fogging or deodorizing treatments have a place, but only in specific situations — after a fire, following a death in the home, or when mold has developed through a humidifier. Outside of those cases, we don’t recommend it; here’s our full position on duct fogging.
None of this holds if the moisture source isn’t fixed first. Cleaning the ducts without addressing whatever introduced the moisture — a leak, an oversized or malfunctioning humidifier, chronic basement humidity — just means the mold comes back.
Preventing It Coming Back
Keeping mold from coming back comes down to controlling moisture, not chasing mold after the fact:
- Keep indoor humidity under 50% — an inexpensive hygrometer makes this easy to track, especially in the basement.
- Insulate cold duct runs — uninsulated ductwork in a basement or crawl space is where condensation forms fastest; insulating it removes the cold surface mold needs to get started.
- Keep the blower fan running rather than cycling on a schedule — constant airflow helps evaporate moisture in the system before it has time to sit.
- Have your ducts professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years — this clears out the dust and debris mold needs as a food source before it builds up.
